Breakfast, After School Clubs and Holiday Playschemes

Service

Breakfast, after school clubs and holiday playschemes should make reasonable adjustments to include all children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). They provide care for children and young people aged 4 – 19 years. The Family Information Service can provide information and extra support to find care that is suitable for you and your child. West Sussex County Council also offers The Holiday, Activity and Food (HAF) programme.

What we do:

  • Out of school care, including breakfast clubs, after school clubs and holiday playschemes, are registered with Ofsted, except where they only cater for children aged 8 and over. However, they can apply to be registered with Ofsted on a voluntary basis.
  • Breakfast clubs care for children before school, typically from 7.30am. This often takes place on school premises. After school clubs typically provide care until 6pm. This often takes place on school premises.
  • Holiday playschemes provide care during the school holidays, typically on weekdays from 8am to 6pm, within leisure centres, community centres, and schools. Childminders can also offer before and after school care, and holiday care.
  • The Ordinarily Available Inclusive Practice guide highlights the expectations and strategies that can ‘ordinarily’ be provided for a child in a mainstream setting: https://schools.local-offer.org/send-toolkit/ordinarily-available-inclusive-practice/
  • The HAF programme provides free places at activity providers for children in receipt of benefit related Free School Meals during the Easter, Summer and Christmas Holidays.
